Alexis Roberson, 17, is a Covenant House
resident and recent graduate from Warren Easton High School in New Orleans.
We are thrilled to report that the hard work and dedication that Alex
put forth has paid off big time. She just received a 4 year full scholarship
to LSU! She plans to study Biology and then tackle Medical School.
Alex came to Covenant House after leaving a dysfunctional
and abusive home. She had always used school as an escape and stayed
there long hours studying as well as participating in the school band,
she plays clarinet. When she could no longer remain in her home, she
came to Covenant House where she knew she would be safe and could continue
working to achieve her academic goals. Leaving the “stress”
of her home behind, Alex was able to finish her senior year and graduated
with a 4.2 GPA!
She is looking forward to moving into her dorm in August
and starting a new and exciting chapter in her life. She’s already
texting with her new roommate. Alex says that she’ll be a little
sad when she gets to her dorm and sees all the other kids being dropped
off by their parents. But at the same time, she says she’ll feel
proud that she made it on her own…with a little help from Covenant
House.
Congratulations, Alex! We couldn’t be prouder!
We are so proud of CHNO resident, Anthony
Ordon. Anthony is 19 years old and has been at CHNO since September.
Anthony recently moved from our Crisis Shelter into The Dove Apartments
owned by Covenant House. He is working toward his GED. We wish him the
best of luck! He's worked very hard and we know he will do well!
Anthony also recently earned his Certified
Nursing Assistant Certificate and will soon start working in a hospital
as a CNA.

Anthony Ordon, proudly shows us his Certified
Nursing Certificate. He says, "Covenant House helped me to become
a more successful person. They've helped a lot. When I first got here,
I had nothing, no help at all. The Cov gave me structure and kept me
off the streets."

YouthBuild is a youth and community development program
that addresses core issues facing low-income communities. In YouthBuild
Programs, low-income people ages 16-24 work toward their GEDs and learn
valuable job skills in the construction field. Covenant House New Orleans
places residents in this program whenever possible. In this photo, CHNO
resident, Morris, proudly shows his first YouthBuild project, a birdhouse,
to his case manager Ms. Carolyn.
Keep up the great work, Morris! We can't wait to see
what you'll build next!
We are thrilled to report that 3 of our residents,
Durrand, Teara and Jenell, recently received their GEDs. They
are an inspiration to our other residents currently working toward their
own GEDs. Way to go!
We are also very pleased to tell you about 3 of our youth who recently
received fully paid scolarships worth $4000 each to the Sclafani School
of Cooking in New Orleans. Ervin, Kurt and Rachael are the most recent
recipients and upon completion of the program, they will be placed in
good paying jobs within the culinary field in New Orleans. Great work!
Former resident Deja, who we were pleased to tell you graduated from
high school last year, recently completed the Sclafani School of Cooking
and has accepted a great job with a local catering company.
