Shawn, 20, excelled in school as a child – he received training as a Computer Service Tech before matriculating to Texas Southern University; but after only a year, he left school and returned to New Orleans to help his ailing mother, who had been diagnosed with a debilitating brain disorder. The strain of his mother’s illness proved to be too much, and she asked him to leave.
Unwilling to desert his mother, he moved into an abandoned home just down the street in order to keep an eye on her. Alone and without enough money to support himself, he eventually turned to Covenant House for help. He moved into the Rights of Passage program within a month. He’s now majoring in Hospitality Management at Delgado Community College and seeking employment in his field.
