Homelessness contributes to a multitude of health problems;
most go unattended due to lack of access to health care services
combined with limited understanding of health risks. Covenant House
fills this gap for its young clients with a program of primary health
care and wellness education. All youth entering Covenant House are
provided medical services free of charge. For many, this is the
first checkup they've ever had. A health assessment is conducted
within 24 hours of intake. Immunizations are provided, as well as
testing, care and counseling for HIV, Hepatitis B and C, STDs, substance
abuse and tuberculosis. A weekly psychiatric clinic offers clinical
intervention to youth in need and a wellness education program provides
counseling regarding negative health practices. Last year, over
500 youth received health services.
